GM 6.2L V8 · Engine Code L87

Your 6.2L L87 Now Needs 0W-40. Don’t Settle for “Good Enough.”

GM made 0W-40 the permanent requirement for the L87 — not the 0W-20 it shipped with. Give the engine you paid for the 0W-40 that exceeds the dexos® R spec, not just meets it.

Meets & exceeds dexos® R · Lists the 6.2L L87 as an application · In stock, ships fast · Independent AMSOIL Dealer #1858536

Does this apply to your truck? Read this first.

The 0W-40 switch on this page applies to 6.2L L87 engines covered by the official GM recall, and only after the engine has passed the GM dealer’s recall inspection. If your vehicle is included in the recall, GM moves you to a 0W-40 permanently as part of the remedy.

If your engine is not part of the recall, or hasn’t been inspected yet, keep running the 0W-20 your owner’s manual specifies until GM tells you otherwise — don’t switch viscosity on your own. For those engines we recommend AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-20 (ASM). Not sure where your vehicle stands? Call us at 1-678-944-8816 or check your recall status with GM.

Why the L87 needs a real 0W-40 — fast version

  • Meets and exceeds dexos® R, and built for this engine. AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-40 (AZF) meets the dexos® R specification GM now requires and specifically lists the 6.2L L87 as an application — no guesswork.
  • ~2× the oil film of the original 0W-20. The recall remedy is about protection: 0W-40 roughly doubles film thickness at operating temperature, putting a stronger hydraulic cushion between the rod bearings and crankshaft.
  • Higher HTHS where it counts. 3.5+ cP high-temp/high-shear viscosity (vs ~2.6 for 0W-20 — about 35% higher) keeps that film intact under load and heat — exactly the failure mode the L87 recall is about.

Why run “meets the minimum” oil in an engine GM already flagged? Step up to the 0W-40 that beats the spec.

How to get AMSOIL 0W-40 in your L87 — the easy way

The recall work itself has to be done by a GM dealer, and that’s fine — let them. The trick is lining up your AMSOIL oil change to happen in the same visit, right after, so you drive away on the oil you actually want.

  1. Let the dealer do the recall. They perform the PICO test (the recall inspection) and the initial oil change with the GM-provided 0W-40. This is required by the recall and is at no cost to you.
  2. Pre-schedule your oil change when you book the recall. Ask your recall-performing dealer to have a normal oil change ready to go for the same appointment.
  3. Switch to AMSOIL immediately after. As soon as the recall is completed, ask the dealer to perform a normal oil change using customer-supplied AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-40 that you bring with you.

Some dealers give customers a hard time about installing oil you supply. You’re within your rights to provide your own — AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-40 meets and exceeds the dexos® R specification the recall calls for. Bring it with you, keep your receipt, and the dealer simply installs it. If you’d rather not deal with the back-and-forth, call us at 1-678-944-8816 and we’ll help you get it sorted.

It’s the same 0W-40 we run and recommend for these trucks and SUVs.

L87 0W-40 — quick answers

What oil does the GM 6.2L L87 require after the recall?

GM now permanently requires a 0W-40 synthetic motor oil that meets its dexos® R specification, not the 0W-20 the engine originally shipped with. AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-40 (AZF) meets and exceeds dexos® R requirements and lists the 6.2L L87 as an application.

Does AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-40 meet the dexos R requirement?

Yes. AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-40 (AZF) meets and exceeds the dexos® R specification and is engineered for high-output engines like the GM 6.2L L87 — delivering a thicker oil film and higher HTHS viscosity than the original 0W-20.

Can I do my own 0W-40 oil changes after the dealer recall service?

Yes. The initial recall inspection must be done by a GM dealer, but after that you can change your own oil with any 0W-40 synthetic that meets the dexos® R specification, such as AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-40 (AZF). Keep records of every oil change.

Will using AMSOIL 0W-40 void my GM warranty?

No. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits a manufacturer from voiding your warranty for using a quality aftermarket oil. A 0W-40 like AMSOIL that meets the dexos® R specification satisfies the recall requirement and protects your engine.
